Many people don’t notice it themselves; a dentist usually notices the wear on their teeth during a routine checkup. Furthermore, a grinding sound at night is often heard by family members. Findings such as flattened teeth, cracks, enamel loss, and sensitivity are evaluated for diagnosis. Thickened jaw muscles, joint noises, and limited movement are also helpful in diagnosis. Panoramic X-rays or MRIs of the joints may also be performed if necessary.
