Do wearing braces affect speech?

A slight lisp may be present in the first few days as the tongue adjusts to the brackets and wires. However, speech generally returns to normal within a week. The adjustment period for lingual (internally worn) braces may be slightly longer. Braces do not negatively impact speech in the long term.
